What a UAN check confirms

Every salaried employee's provident fund contributions sit under one Universal Account Number, issued by EPFO and carried across employers for life. That makes it a statutory record of who actually paid into a candidate's account, and when, independent of what any one employer chooses to confirm. Where the dates a candidate declares and the dates EPFO holds do not agree, that is worth knowing before an offer, not after.

UAN validity

That the number is valid and belongs to the candidate.

Employer names on record

Every establishment that has contributed to the account, as EPFO holds it.

Service dates per employer

Contribution date ranges for each employer, set against the dates the candidate declared.

Overlapping contributions

A second employer contributing during a period declared as full time elsewhere, the clearest signal that dual employment is happening.

Contribution gaps

Periods with no contribution from any employer, set against declared gaps rather than assumed to mean the same thing.

Establishment status

The EPFO establishment code for each employer, which confirms it is a registered entity rather than a name on a CV.

Sources. The EPFO member portal against the UAN, and EPFO establishment records for each employer that has contributed. The response is annexed to the case exactly as EPFO returned it.

What UAN adds, and what it does not

UAN and an employer-confirmed employment check answer different questions. Most roles need both.

From the statutory record

UAN and EPFO contribution history

What EPFO's own record shows, without depending on a former employer answering the phone.

  1. Employer names and establishment status, straight from EPFO.
  2. Contribution dates for every employer on the account.
  3. Overlapping contributions, which is where dual employment shows up.
  4. Survives an employer that has shut down, since the record sits with EPFO, not the company.
From the employer

Employer-confirmed verification

What EPFO's record does not carry, confirmed directly with HR.

  1. Designation and title, which EPFO does not record.
  2. Reason for leaving, as the employer states it.
  3. Rehire eligibility, often the most useful line in the file.
  4. A direct answer where UAN data is thin, such as very recent joiners.

How it works

Four steps, run against a statutory record rather than an inbox.

Consent and UAN collected

The candidate consents and provides their UAN, or the details needed to locate it.

Contribution history retrieved

The full service history under that UAN, employer by employer, pulled from the EPFO member portal.

Cross-checked against declared history

Dates and employer names set against what the candidate told you, with any overlap flagged.

Result published

The finding, with the EPFO response annexed to the case.

Questions we get asked

What is a UAN?
A Universal Account Number, issued by EPFO to every provident fund member. It stays with the person across every employer, unlike the member ID each employer assigns.
How does this catch moonlighting?
A contribution from a second employer during a period the candidate declared as full time elsewhere is a statutory record of dual employment, not an accusation. See the moonlighting check for how we help you act on it.
What if the candidate does not know their UAN?
It can usually still be located from other identifiers. It is worth asking for before the case is raised, since it saves a step.
Does UAN alone confirm designation and reason for leaving?
No. EPFO records contributions, not job titles or exit conversations. Those come from an employer-confirmed employment check, run alongside it.
What if an employer never contributed, or paid the candidate informally?
A gap in contributions is reported as a gap, not as a false employment claim. Informal or unregistered pay arrangements exist, and the report says what it can and cannot confirm rather than guessing.
How long does it take?
It depends on the EPFO portal's responsiveness and whether the UAN is active and on file. The committed number for your roles is set when the package is scoped.
