What a bank account check confirms

A bank account check answers one question: does this account belong to this candidate. It matters more than it sounds, because a payroll run against the wrong account, or an account that belongs to someone else, is a payment you have to chase back rather than a line in a report.

Account number

The number as declared, confirmed active and open at the bank.

IFSC and branch

Validated against the Reserve Bank of India's IFSC directory and resolved to the correct bank and branch.

Registered account holder name

The name the bank holds against the account, as distinct from the name typed into a form.

Name-match result

The declared name checked against the registered name, with minor spelling variations noted rather than silently passed or failed.

Account status

Active, inactive, dormant or closed, as the bank reports it at the time of the check.

Verification method

Penny-drop or a direct bank record match, recorded on the report so you know how the finding was reached.

Sources. The bank that holds the account, through a penny-drop credit or a direct record match, and the Reserve Bank of India's IFSC directory. The bank's own response is annexed to the finding.

How it works

Three steps. There is no field visit: the check runs entirely against records the bank already holds.

Details submitted

The candidate gives the account number, IFSC and the name it should be registered under.

Verified at the bank

Either a penny-drop, a small amount credited and reversed to confirm the account is live and return the registered name, or a direct match against the bank's own record.

Result published

The match result and account status land in your dashboard, with the bank's response annexed.

Questions we get asked

What is penny-drop verification?
A small amount credited to the account and then reversed. The bank's response confirms the account is live and returns the name it is registered under.
What if the account name does not exactly match the candidate's name?
Minor variations, such as an initial written out in full, are noted rather than treated as a failure. A name that does not resemble the candidate's at all is flagged and left for you to decide on.
Isn't a cancelled cheque enough to confirm an account?
A cancelled cheque shows what is printed on it, not what the bank's own record says today. An account can be closed or the name misprinted, and a cheque will not tell you either.
What if the account is a joint account?
It is reported as such, with the registered holder names the bank returns. Whether a joint account is acceptable for payroll is your call.
Does this check show the candidate's balance or transactions?
No. It confirms that the account exists, is active, and belongs to the candidate. Balance and transaction detail are not part of what is checked or reported.
How long does it take?
It depends on the receiving bank's response. A penny-drop is usually close to instant; an offline record match takes longer. The committed number for your roles is set when the package is scoped.
