What a credit check confirms

A credit check reads a candidate's history with lenders through an RBI-licensed credit information company, commonly known in India as a CIBIL check. It is run only for roles that handle money or carry financial authority, and only once the candidate has given written consent to that specific check.

Credit score

The score as reported by the bureau, the single figure most lenders and employers read first.

Repayment history

The track record on existing loans and credit cards: paid on time, delayed, or missed.

Outstanding balances

Debt currently owed across active accounts, set against the candidate's declared financial position where relevant.

Defaults and write-offs

Loans marked defaulted, settled or written off by a lender, with the account type and lender.

Enquiry history

Recent applications for credit, which can signal financial stress before a default ever appears.

Wilful defaulter and suit-filed status

Flags raised by lenders for non-payment pursued through recovery or litigation.

Sources. An RBI-licensed credit information company, queried against the candidate's PAN once written consent for a credit check has been given. The response is annexed to the report exactly as the bureau returned it.

Four things a credit report carries

The report is one document with four distinct parts. A role rarely needs all four read the same way, which is why the summary you receive keeps them separate.

Credit score

The number, and the band it falls in.

Loan accounts

Active and closed loans, with tenure and repayment record.

Credit card accounts

Utilisation and payment record on every card on file.

Defaults and settlements

Written-off debt, settlements, and suit-filed or wilful-defaulter flags.

How it works

Four steps. Consent for a credit check is collected separately from consent for the rest of the file, because it is a different kind of information.

Written consent collected

The candidate gives specific written consent for a credit check, separate from consent for the rest of the file. Without it, the bureau will not release a report.

Bureau queried

The report is pulled from an RBI-licensed credit information company against the candidate's PAN.

Reviewed against the role

The score and any adverse flags are read against what the role actually requires, not treated as a pass or fail on their own.

Result published

The score and the relevant flags land in your dashboard, with the bureau's response annexed.

Questions we get asked

Why does a credit check need separate consent?
Because a credit bureau will not release a report on request alone. The candidate gives written consent specific to the credit check, on top of the general consent that covers the rest of the file.
What does GVS actually check?
The score, repayment history on existing loans and cards, outstanding balances, and any default, settlement or wilful-defaulter flag on record with the bureau.
Does the employer see the candidate's full credit history?
No. You receive the score and the flags relevant to the role. An itemised account-by-account statement is not part of what is shared.
Which roles actually need this?
Roles with financial authority: handling payments, managing accounts, or signing on the organisation's behalf. It is not run as a default check on every hire.
Does a low score or an old default rule a candidate out?
That is your decision, not ours. The report states what the bureau holds. What it means for a specific role is a judgement only you can make.
How long does it take?
It depends on how quickly the bureau responds and whether the candidate's PAN and consent details match cleanly. The committed number for your roles is set when the package is scoped.
