What a police verification confirms

Police verification is a physical process, filed with the police station that covers where a candidate lives, and it produces a clearance record from that station. It draws on local knowledge as well as records, which is what makes it slower than a database search and, for some roles, more than a database search can tell you.

How it works

How is this different from a court record check?
A court record check searches case records at the courts covering a candidate's address history. Police verification is a physical process filed with the local station, and draws on local enquiry as well as records. They ask different questions, and most high-risk roles run both.
Why does this take longer than other checks?
It depends on a police station's own workload and process, not a database query. That makes it one of the slower checks by nature, not by any delay on our side.
Which address does the verification run against?
The address you specify, usually the candidate's current address. It can be run against a permanent address as well, as a separate check.
Is this required for every role?
No. Some regulated roles, such as private security personnel, require it by law. Most employers run it as their own policy for roles that justify it.
What does the station's finding actually say?
Whatever the station states: a clearance, or the finding on file. It is recorded as given, not summarised into something it did not say.
How long does it take?
It depends on the specific station's workload and process, which is why it usually runs slower than a database check. The committed number for your roles is set when the package is scoped.
